  1. I would be interested to know whether anyone thinks any of these four mini story/situations could be better in B&W

  2. (grrr. my first comment got lost when I pressed Publish! Writing again, but will be shorter!)

Street view is def. better in B&W to me. The blue tops took all the focus and made it look less interesting ("oh, it's another touristy school/college visit"), but now I can't see what or why they're staring, which adds intrigue.

You've captured iconic sibling looks: the older one looks like she's just found a way to dupe or trick her younger sis', and the younger one already has the look of someone who has learnt to be suspicious.

The chair shots lack context for me. The initial shot needs a wider view, somehow it doesn't look as relaxing as I think it's supposed to. The second shot would be more interesting with a few more clues - a blurred figure running away in the background or something.

The cooking shots work better in colour, although that bright red lid takes too much visual priority and distracts from the food. These shots would work well in a recipe book because they depict a very tidy, clean and therefore staged kitchen scene. I think that some mess/sign of work would have made it more of a real life story, but perhaps that's not the tale you were telling?

    1. Your “clean and therefore staged kitchen scene” comment made me chuckle.

  3. I think that the “Oh, what happened?” is improved with the B&W but the first one loose the blue shirts that made it more interesting because they all seemed to be related to each other, the food shots also loose there appeal to me as the colours are the bit I found interesting.

  4. Thanks so much Rich and Steve for these very helpful comments.

All those people had tipped out of the building because there were loud fire alarms going but it may just have been a rehearsal because no one looked agitated. Your comment about all being in blue shirts reminded me tat that was what drew my attention to it now that I think about it.

I have to say that the cooking was entirely spontaneous. I started browning the lamb and suddenly thought 'photo'. I had already prepared everything so I just bunched them together and kept climbing up on to a bar stool between stirring and adding so that I could get overhead shots. So the actual cooking went slightly awry. And no, the cooker was not spotless - thought of that too late, so I put the red dish I had been planning to put it into the oven in, on the messy bit. But then I changed my mind about the dish.

The deck chair - I think I hoped that the football might look like the culprit - no people around that day so yes, it was totally contrived.

The kids? I am always trying to get those fleeting expressions which are so difficult - maybe that is why Munkasci interests me - it's that moment
