In my 16 years in Oxford this night club has been the Zodiac, the Carling Academy (aka the Cardiac) and now the O2 academy. Pictured typically, the morning after a sold out gig with tour bus obscuring corporate logo.
This man runs the Classic Beers and Wines (aka the gone-offy on account of it selling past best before date beer cheap!).
Better?
Pretty, I thought, but poignant, too. Cowley Road is always changing, I liked that the shadows falling on these brand new flats looked like icons of temporary living: tents.

I think there is a massive change in these shots over your last ones, there is a real good use of space in the frame on the sunny side of oxford, the shop keeper and the sushi.
ReplyDeleteA very good sense of the movement in the second picture and the high action bun movement picture.
The portrait of the shop keeper has a nice use of light that makes is very natural and comfortable pose (PS I have never heard of a shop like this before, very strange).
Hopfully you did get threatened this time when out taking pictures.
I'm going to read that "hopefully you *did* get threatened" as a typo ;-)
Deleteha ha......erm yer typo that's it ;0)
DeleteStick my neck out! I thought your first lot captured the energy and diversity of the area slightly more strongly. And I think the photo that you have cropped was more interesting before you cropped it.
ReplyDeleteHaving said that, I really liked your two portraits. They both tell their story. I also liked your use of shallow depth of field in several of your photos, and your use of slower shutter speed to capture the movement of the cyclist and of the hand moving the bun. And interesting colour combinations of the beads? and the Sunny side.
Thanks, Seonaid. Appreciate your honesty.
DeleteI agree about the crop, which makes it look like those are the only two people in the world - I liked the extra guy esp. because he was walking a different direction and reading a book. Suppose it's a first impressions thing, really, and you can't recreate those with the same group of people.
Included some of these just because of the colours. I thought it was serendipitous [ok, I have never used that word like that before] that the classic wines man had a blue jacket and was lit by blue morning light such that the artificial lights behind him looked the complimentary yellow. And on the sunny side, I heavily cropped that photo to try to visually balance the yellow and blue.
Look forward to tonight's discussion.
I agree with Seonaid that you have captured the diversity better this time.. Rich I find your two portraits very interesting and I like the contrasting colours in the off licence. I was wondering in the sushi picture if you could do something similar. Also I find the angle slightly off, could have got a little more out of this picture. Also in the O2 academy picture there is something in the left corner that is disturbing. To you questions Better? Yes in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments, Alexandros.
DeleteI'm not sure what you meant about capturing diversity "better this time" if you also agree with Seonaid because Seonaid said she thought diversity was better *last* time? Be interested which set you thought did this better.
The problem with shooting real people in real situations is that you have limited scope to ask them to pose with different backgrounds!
See you tonight.
